Seeds I would like to grow - my ideas, questions, thoughts and proposals
I am planning a Flannel Shirt Festival for June 27th and 28th in Waldoboro, Maine, coinciding with the ""Out of the Darkness" walk in Chicago. The Festival will be a fundraiser for the Flannel Shirt Fund, which was started in honor of Joel Larsen Cartwright, (1984 - 2008 ) who took his life on the morning of June 27th. http://knox.villagesoup.com/announcements/ObituaryStory.cfm?storyID... The Flannel Shirt Fund gives grants to groups in Maine working to connect farms to schools and children with gardens. The Festival will be a time to honor the land, our community and our artists and musicians. It will also be a time to raise awareness about mental illness in Maine, and share ways we can better support ourselves and our loved ones. This event will be rich in discussion, poetry, meditation, movement, music and fresh air ! There will be music throughout the day, beginning with a classical music garden party, and ending at the river with a barge carrying a jazz sextet. Kayaks and canoes will be available to explore the sound from different spots on the water. There will be a potluck at the theater annex, followed by an evening variety show to kick off an overnight walk to Walker's beach in Friendship. There will be more music and dance along the way at various points during the walk, and a mike and amps will be set up at the beach for further poetry, music and stories on the shore. The variety show will include the first annual "Flannel Shirt Burlesque," a parody of fashion, with a red flannel runway, high-lighting the finest flannel shirts and organic vegetables. There will be skits, song and dance exploring the themes of mental illness, sustainability and community. I am hoping to get a few "name" artists to perform, along with many of the midcoast's finest musicians, in many genres ~ jazz, classical, celtic, bluegrass, funk. This should be a night to remember! For those who want to, there will be a slumber party at the theater annex, and Sunday will be a day of Authentic Movement, bodywork exchanges, meditations, low-key music and a sleepy Sunday brunch. I hope that the "Night Walk" can be a small satellite of the Chicago walk. It is not as long. There won't be nearly as many people. But the more I think about a quote my brother gave after receiving the Community Service Award at Bowdoin College, the more I feel like he would appreciate us doing something local. "I will try to live simply and effectively and hope that my life will stand as a measure of the love I feel for the people I know and the place I live." ~ Joel Cartwright, 2006 I hope to have website launched in the next few weeks, and I would love to have it linked to the "Out of Darkness" site. Let me know if you have other ideas or recommendations for people or organizations to contact. Thanks so much ! I look forward to hearing from you all, Chelsea Cartwright (Joel's little sister) 24 School Street Brunswick, Maine 04011 607-342-2026

"Promalathium" ..[proh-thuh-ley-mee-uhm] noun a song in celebration of a marriage

This poem by Aaron Kramer is the poem appetizer for Barbara Kingsolver's book "Prodigal Summer." It comes from an out-of-print book of poetry called "The Thunder of the Grass."

"Prothalamium"

Come, all you who are not satisfied
as ruler in a lone, wallpapered room
full of mute birds, and flowers that falsely bloom,
and closets choked with dreams that long ago died !

Come, let us sweep the old streets -- like a bride:
sweep out dead leaves with a relentless broom;
prepare for Spring, as though he were our groom
for whose light footstep eagerly we bide.

We'll sweep out shadows, where the rats long fed;
sweep out our shame -- and in its place we'll make
a bower for love, a splendid marriage-bed
fragrant with flowers aquiver for the Spring.
And when he come, our murdered dreams shall wake;
and when he comes, all the mute birds shall sing.

--Aaron Kramer
